i know this has already been discussed by the search function is not working, does anyone know where i can find the changelog for the summer update? i recall they were changing one of the text implementations to make it faster, but i dont recall which, and id really like to read the tech spec.

You could read the docs, the section "What''s New in DirectX 9.0 SDK Update (Summer 2003)" might help.
The ID3DXFont interface was changed in 9.0b summer update, to make it faster.
In the SDK tree, expand "DirectX Graphics", then go to "What's new in DirectX Graphics". It talks about all the stuff right there.
