Arcade mode vs PC mode

Recommended Posts

I''ve seen some action games with an "arcade mode" and a "PC mode" of gameplay. I''m not totally sure what the differences are supposed to be between these 2 different modes of gameplay, but it looks cool and I want to try to implement this into a 2D shoot-em-up action game of my own. Can anyone elaborate on "arcade mode" and "PC mode" for me?

Basically, the arcade mode is generally a simpler, more straight-forward game, where the PC mode has some extra stuff that you wouldn''t see in an arcade game.

A good example is Sega''s House of the Dead 2 (I think). The arcade mode is just a straight shooter, but the PC mode lets you choose which character to play as, with each character having different stats for health, weapon power, gun capacity, etc.

Arcade mode might also have simplified movement and damage models, and handle resources in a simpler fashion.

Arcade is to PC as game is to simulation. For arcade mode, some detail is removed.
