How to render Maya like move axis transforms.

In maya, when the mode is set to ''Move Selection'', a small axis is rendered. When you click and drag on the red axis, you move whatever is selected along the transform''s x axis. Cool and intuitive. Thing I don''t understand is how to fix the axis lengths. Like if you zoom in, the axis do not grow in length. They remain the same visually. Yet they''re still drawn in 3D space. How do you do this?

1. Increase / Decrease size to scale depending on distance to object, so the object takes the same ammount of screenspace.
2. Do an orthographic ''translation'' of 3d ''worldspace'' to ''2d'' space and draw it as a 2d representation cleverly placed over the 3d ''point in worldspace''.

There''s probably a few more clever ones out there, I''d probably attempt something like 1, because it appears to be more of a challenge (and might not be entirely possible with some GFX APIs ..., but hopefully satisfactory).
