Direct Sound: Safe write versus read positions

If one is Playing using Direct Sound, you can use the ->GetCurrentPosition(readposition, safewriteposition) to find where one can safely write data to the buffer. What is interesting to know is the difference ''safewriteposition - readposition'' ahead of time. It appears to be hardware dependendent. Does anyone know if this value changes? I want to know this value as for my application it is necessary to get as close as possible to the readposition to the time between signal synthesis and signal sending is as small as possible (ideally zero). It is even MORE important in the capture case. There is would be nice to be able to read the data as it arrives, or at least read the data right up to the current write position. THen the latency would be reduced to the time interval between reads. Brian Brian Reinhold
