Targetting Mechanism for Shoot em up

Targeting mechanism. I want to implement a target feature for a shoot em up in DelphiX, but I want it to be logical and smooth. So how should I do it. What I''ve currently done so far: For the moment I just count each sprite and target the first sprite of the proper type. If I''m targeting for the next target, I store the current number of the sprite, and then go through with the same counting and targeting the first proper sprite after the old one. But as my sprites for the moment appear randomly on screen (ranomd y coord) the targeting mechanism seems a bit odd. Is there a better way of doing this? thanks guys PS: sorry for the previous doble post.
