It''s pretty straight forward to write a 3ds-loader/converter or whatver you want. The only thing that''s hard is to get anything useful out of the local coordinate axes stored in the files, but you can manage without them, sorta.

You can get information on the 3DS format from http://www.wotsit.org - It''s not very difficult to decipher - you just need a selection of nested procedures/loops to read in and decipher the ''chunks'' of data.

Hiiiiiii!
I''ve written a 3DS loader which loads all meshes and materials.
I am working on texture loading from 3DS. My code is not complete, since I skip lot of info (eg: local coords., Key framer data etc.). But it loads meshes into my D3DIM 3D Engine (NO! not D3D Frame work). Presently I converts the 3DS file into my own Plain Mesh File (.PMF) format with data I need. Contact me for the code at digicrush_ii@rediff.com.
