Random city map generation

Hi, i want to develop a random city map generator wich would produce maps similar to this. Smooth roads, building blocks, maybe a river, it would be cool to be able to parametrize all this things: 10% water, 20% roads... you got the point. Now, wich technique/algo do you think it''s better suited to approach this problem? I don''t know where to start... Thanks

Googling for "procedural city" (in quotes) scores two papers on the first results page that may help. They''re both pdf files.

Also, I seem to remember a thread bishop_pass started a while back asking about procedural cities or towns. I can''t seem to find it now, though. If anyone does, can you post the link here, please?
