How to link objects to child bones ?

Suppose we have a character like a hero. And we would want the hero to hold a different swords in his hand. Suppose we use bones to setup the hierarchy of the hero. The easiest way to change different swords in his hand would be that we load the sword as a separate entity and link it to the hero''s hand bone. (is it possible ?) Like this we can change any object the hero is holding. plz advice if there is a method to do this with bones.

couldnt think of a reason why it shouldnt. give the weapon a little offset when modelling (so it wont appear in the wrist but a little in front and to the side, then use this bone for all vertices of the weapon). you might even want to keep a few pointers to certain bones around (hands, feet, etc.)
