To be a little more precise on my answer: Take a look at what pthreads offer you. Take a look at what you are trying to do. If pthreads fullfill all your needs they're ok. If they don't you should look for something else.

pthreads are the way to go if your on a unix system (Linux, Sun, Mac OSX).
It for posix standard threads hence the name pthread. Perty much they all have same calls and arguments but there might be a few methods added base on platfrom.
If your worried about cross platform then get a tread wrapper class or interface that codes to what the system has for threads.
