changing texture font size in ortho?

hi, i''m wondering if there''s a way to make my fonts appear bigger or smaller using opengl in ortho mode without having to use multiple font.bmp''s for each font size. I''ve tried to tranlate Z value right before i call my GL_QUADS but it doesn''t seem to have any effect at all. Can someone point me in the right direction? thx.
