is it possible to texture a mesh that was created with D3DXCreateBox and the other shape drawing functions?

Yes, but you have to change the Flexible Vertex Format (FVF) using CloneMeshFVF and them manually calculate the texture coordinates. However, in the case of a box that should be a simple task.
