keyboard buffer

Well, as far as I know, there _is_ no DirectInput Buffer,unless you use Buffered Input for the Keyboard, which in my opinion is stupid, all you have to do is use immediate mode and just take a ''snapshot'' of the keyboard. Its all in the wonderfully long and boring Manual/Help/TimeWaster in the SDK. Look at the tutorials.
