Auxillary library bad practice?

Indeed it is. GLAUX is deprecated by the ARB, and has been so for a long time now. It is unstable, full of bugs, and leaks memory. You should avoid it like the plague.


I remember reading somewhere it is but I have seen it used in quite a few places like NeHe...

Nehe has never been an example of good coding / API usage style. In fact, his tutorials are pretty much the exact opposite... And even he finally switched to a glaux alternative in one of the later tuts, afaik.
