Originality and innovation are overrated. Well, maybe it''s not overrating as much as it is trying to run before you can walk; as far as I can tell, a large portion of current game designers can''t even handle the basics.

That is true if the player has already paid for your game in a retail store. If you sell your games online by giving players demos, you have much, much less than an hour.

Which is why I think one of the most important innovative directions is to _preserve_ gameplay from hardcore retail titles and package it in an instantly accessible form.
