On the GDAlgorithms list, Tom Forsyth says it''s been done before. I''ve tried to find a link, but the archives over at sourceforge.net don''t seem to find the discussion (it''s called "Bump + offset mapping").

Doh!
I''ve tried the "search" feature on this page, using the string "Bump + offset mapping" and it returns no results (I''ve double-checked right before posting this).

SourceForge''s search is broken?

Anyway, thanks for the link

yeah I posted the same technique about 2 months ago after hacking around an idea for a few hours.

I didn't get such a huge responce and I was very extremly busy at the time so I didn't go any further with the technique (I still have a few ideas though).

Wait -- is this the same thing as offset mapping, or is there something more here? I''m just curious, it''s amazing (as I said already)
