What is it? I''m figuring it has something to do with animation, but I don''t really know. I''ve entered into some contests for fun, and one of the entries needs to include at least three of the following: Sound Text Scripting Video Animation Graphics So, I''d like to do all of them, I just don''t really know what scripting is. _GEo.

Scripting is the glue that allows designers to give instructions to the game engine without having to program. Have you ever played a game, and accessed its ''console'' to enter a cheat? If so, thats scripting.

Although scripting could including having a certain in game character run a particular animation, its much more than that. Scripting is what allows for modding, creating levels, etc.

Go the gamedev article section a do a searh, quite a few articles their on scripting how to implement it.

You could also try the Scripting and Modding forum.

To add further to what yspotua said; scripting doesn''t require that the EXE of the game / program to be recompiled when you make changes to the script.

The script is loaded and interpreted by the host program; it can be as simple or complex as the designer wants, some range from a simple list of statements

eg:
DoSomethingCool
DoSomethingElseCool
StopDoingThingsCool

to a fully-featured language, with conditions and even classes.

An example outside the gaming world, when you make a webpage with code (such as HTML and javascript) and save to a file, the web browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer) reads the file and displays what needs to be displayed to the screen. Web pages are all scripted. A scripting language is not really a programming language, but a language read by the program''s code (the program that was created by a real programming language''s code). Most people that create websites use html editors such as Microsoft Frontpage and Macromedia Dreamweaver, where you have a friendly user interface that writes the scripts for you. Web page creation is a much more advanced scripting type.

This may be the case in languages such as C/C++ and Java, but this is absolutely not the case in languages like Lisp. Here the scripting language is a direct extension of the programming language and as such can be compiled into the executable on the fly (i.e. while the game is running).

In Lisp: code, data, runtime, compile-time don't have the same hard boundaries as is the case with other languages.
