Are there any websites around that give you excercises to try based on what knowledge you have? I know a decent bit about the basics of programming, but I do not know of any applications to write that will reinforce that knowledge. Any links or help otherwise will be appreciated. Thanks.

Try writing something that simulates John Conway''s Game of Life. You can find a a description of the game and it''s rules here. It''s really not that difficult once you understand the concept.
