MMORPGS: Story ideas? Christian Elements?

Recommended Posts

GottaBeKD    122
Hi! I plan to start work on a mmorpg, along with half the world out there. Has anyone heard of any great ideas that they would like to see for an MMORPG story? Can you think of anything mmorpg story/universes that haven''t been done but you would love to see? Can you think of any mmorpg story that might have a chrisian perspective, or a way to sneak in a few christian elements?

I always liked the way Star Wars Galaxies implemented its item crafting.. with the resource gathering/resource quality/crafter skill all lending to the finished object. I thought that was perfect.

As for Christian elements, I am a Christian, and I have no idea how to create a Christian game that is fun, short of bible educational games. I think it would be very hard to get it mainstream.

yeah, although it's a good idea, i think it would actually be MORE fun to create (this is just an idea here) a new religion, so the player takes it more lightly, maybe you can put in some kind of religious war (in good taste, ofcourse), for instance: two gods wage war against eachother, and the players are either demigods (messengers of their gods, with flags and/or banners) or someone who believes in one of the religions. OR if you are truly a believer (rank that the player can earn) you become a demigod =)

that's just an idea I got while typing this reply, I don't actually think this would be a good game, but hell, if you can do something with it, be my guest...

Well, it''s not a computer game, but "Ars Magica" is a roleplaying game that deals with christian elements in a very convincing way. The game is set at 1200 AD, the catholic church is both a negative force (eg, the crusades, the persecution of pagans) and a positive force (charity, etc) in the game.

the only thing i could think of with a Christian element to it would sound kinda cheezy...

Left Behind: Online

Basically, it''d be the tribulation in an MMORPG setting. read Revelation and the Left Behind books for mor information.

You might get some good ideas at the Christian Gaming website.

MattS423: A Left Behind-based series of games is already in the works. Probably not MMORPG, but at least somebody thought of it. I think N''Lightning Software is developing it.

ultima 4 & 5 had a virtue system, where you had to follow the good paths to finish the games (there was honesty, compassion, valor, justice, sacrifice, honor, spirituality, and humility). i believe ultima online uses those virtues again, but they aren''t required; you do get a nice boost and special skills if you follow them though.

you could do something similar; pick out some good christian values, categorize them, and give stat bonuses or special powers when characters follow them. just beware: if you make it too blatently christian and preachy it will scare off a good deal of your potential players.

christian elements ...

you are the follower of some guy that hears voices in his and wants to murder all the people that don''t believe in his religion. So you go around murdering non believers. Sounds christian enough.

Well, how about you start with the source? My project will have "Christian elements" in it as well, though it''s not an MMO, but I''ve found the Bible is an excellent source of ideas. There''s all kinds of interesting stories in there that you can pull ideas from. Just be careful not to take too much "creative license", or else you might skew what the Bible actually says.

Ahh...ok..

You could take some verse out of duteronomy or something, and then just go with it until you wind up with something like the matrix (it had something abotu "The Smith", right? and that was supposed to be from something in leviticus...right?)

Oh, and i've just gotta ask...do i know you? there's a girl we used to call KD...and...yeah...

Last Poster: I am not a girl right now, and I never was a girl before, so I don''t think we''re the same person.

Everyone Else:

I like the ideas so far. And I think it is a good idea to make a new ''religion'' so that I can take creative license, but to draw many parallels with Christianity. In this respect I should be able to have creative license without offending Christians, aswell, it might appear to non-believers.

Thanks for your help so far. I need to be thinking of a setting next, and a basic kind of conflict.

Conflict: make it a religious war, people get to chose between science and technology or religion. Or make 2 or 3 different religions where each are trying to murder off the others (non belivers).

if your gonna be making a game based on an established religion....you probably will be facing critism...and negative energy..so id advise you to hide the religion behind the implementation....ie. lose the cross--but in place have another symbol...get my point.

the holy wars would probably make a great story plot...but this time the wars are between 2 gods...

just thought id give my oppinion..

ROFL. When I read the original post my first thought was "if those fundies don''t approve of D&D, you''d never be able to sell them on an MMORPG..." :D

I really don''t think tying a MMO game with Christianity is a good idea. Many people shy away from Christain media for one reason or another.

That''s true, but many Christians shy away from mainstream RPG''s for their own reasons. There''s a huge population of potential buyers out there. The problem has been the lack of good Christian media. Most of what''s available is targeted at children under the heading of Christian education.

Because admittedly, it has mostly been complete crap until the last few years. I played in a christian rock band for a while and played concerts with a lot of the 'big' christian bands in the mid-late 90s. On the music front, things have only gotten better since then. On the movie front, it seems we have a few respectable pieces coming out finally (Left Behind was quality, some new ones in production now). Christian games? The last 'christian' game I played was by n'lightning, and Um, I didn't get too far before I tossed it and uninstalled it. I hate to say that about a group who is trying to combine service with their passion/career, but that particular title (something about a paladin) was just awful.

As for ideas that apply christian themes and values to games, the one that sticks out to me is the 'christ-figure' storyline (I die in your place, etc). Even mainstream media uses this one with major success. Another way to discuss christian elements is to take the route of Age of Empires - a historical look at cultures and beliefs. An RTS based on colonial america, enticing persecuted christians to come to your colony etc... oh well, just some thoughts

And for heavens sake, make sure the 'bad' god has white skin, otherwise the ACLU will be knocking at your door... *sigh*
Good luck.

If you''re going to post flamebait at least have the courage to do it under your own name (And yes, I know who you are).

Let''s keep this on topic -- this isn''t the place for a religious flamewar.

No, its religious fanaticism. Its a problem for any religion, especially monotheistic, absolutist ones that place humans on a pedestal. If you think there aren''t Christian Fundamentalists murdering people throughout the world, you just aren''t paying attention.
