7th Annual AI Programmer's Dinner

Recommended Posts

Its almost time for GDC 2004, and that means its time to plan to stay over that extra day and attend the 7th Annual AI Programmer''s Dinner. It will be held Friday March 26th, 2004 at 7pm. That means if you want to attend this great AI Programming event, you should plan to stay over and not fly home until Saturday. This year''s dinner will be hosted again by Steve "Ferretman" Woodcock, Neil Kirby and yours truely Eric "Geta" Dybsand. We are lining up sponsers to keep the per-person cost to the traditional $20 a person. However, this year, we are strictly limiting attendence to the first 50 people to sign up. Sign up details will be posted in late February. If you want to see pics of previous dinners, then visit gameai.com and click on the "Programmers Dinners" link. Don''t miss this chance to meet and break bread (and drink a bit too) with game AI programmers from all over the world.

A minor correction (Eric didn't know this)....

I'm in the process of moving the GameAI.Com site even as I write this, and so will be down for a couple of days while it's transitioning providers. Under my old provider I was apparently bouncing emails right, left, and sideways, and page updates were mysteriously vanishing....tech support was, of course, no help. Add to that the nigh-infinite amount of spam I was getting and I figured it was just time to move up a notch.

Details about the dinner will be on the site shortly, once we get moved. Until then this forum is a great place for everybody to ask questions, exchange reservations, etc.

Hope to see you all there!

So, are you going to tell us where and what country this is being held or am I suppose to guest?

Sorry, my mistake for assuming everyone reading this would know what and where "GDC 2004" was and would be held. Visit www.gdconf.com for details about the Game Developers Conference (GDC) which is "the" annual (going on since 1989) conference of the game development community and industry. The AI Programmer''s Dinner has always been held on the last night of the conference, and this year that makes it Friday, March 26th, 2004 and the place is San Jose, California, USA, Planet Earth. The restaurant is walking distance from the conference center.

Hope that helps.

Eric

"The restaurant is walking distance from the conference center."

And there is something surreal about a gaggle of 50+ AI geeks making jokes about practicing their flocking, pathfinding and formation-keeping algorithms as they walk the streets of San Jose at night.

I think it''s only surreal for those non -gaming geeks who are watching us make our way through the streets of San Jose. For true gamers , of course, it''s perfectly normal.

Mind you, I think the people at the eatery are always a bit flustered at our little gaggle....

I don''t know about you, but it doesn''t take 50+ like-minded geeks for *me* to practice pathfinding and collision avoidance while walking along the streets of Boston...

Alas, it''s likely I won''t make it again this year.

Which reminds me... I want the Chineese place again. I wasn''t thrilled with the one last year.

But I bet you don''t discuss it with the people next to you!

By the way... lately I''ve been playing EE again (the original). I HATE you! I just can''t manage a 1 v 7 FFA on Medium. I can''t get to building walls fast enough to seal myself off!

Where it says in the "from" field : Hibernia, which is to say Ireland. Although I am French, the rest of the year

Between the GDC and the GenCon, I have been "missing" quite a lot over the years. But then again in the case of the GDC, I doubt I could even afford it (well, maybe one day when this college get organised, they''ll send their MSc students on trips abroad, but that wont be for me I am afraid :-/ )

Just one small correction... it''s still to be resolved (by the UN) as to whether in fact the USA actually is on the Planet Earth, or whether it''s just their leader who''s not from around here!

Once again the deep waters of the Pacific will keep me away... I''m saving my dollars for a conference in Portugal in June!!!

Once again, all those attending are commanded to ''have a drink for me''! Mmm, 50 attendees = 50 drinks for me... wow, I''ll be loaded !!!

Cheers,

Timkin

Too bad Timkin, as I (and I''m sure Ferretman) would enjoy meeting you in person, and tossing back a few together, as we compare notes on designing "zee greatest AI of all time"!

Maybe next year?
