Using linear memory instead of DD Surfaces ?

I''m wondering if this is a good idea for surfaces you need to both read from and write to a lot. It would save you the trouble of locking/unlocking and it wouldn''t add much extra work. The DDS file format is pretty simple, so all you would have to do would be to perform a simple type cast (hopefully at least, I haven''t tried it yet). Any comments / links to other threads?
