Dazed and Confused

I''ve been trying to use gluLookAt, but I gave up on it. So instead I''ve been messing about with simple 3d camera movement. The problem is everything starts to get messy when I invert the camera (ie 180 degrees on the x axis). My zoom in/out is acting a little wierd! I know left is right and right is left when your upside down, and have put code in to deal with that. But I''m still not getting the expected results. Any suggestions people?
