Adapter Format VS Backbuffer Format

What''s the difference. The reason I want to know is that I pass D3DFMT_X8R8G8B8 as the adapter display, but if I pass D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 it fails, but I can pass either for the back buffer format. Thanks in advance.

The D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 specificies to include an 8-bit alpha channel which would be pointless for the frontbuffer (adapter display) and so it isn''t provided. Its the same reason you don''t have a Z or stencil for your frontbuffer. It only needs actual pixel info, that is RGB, because it''s only going straight to the monitor. The backbuffer on the otherhand obviously needs Z, stencil, and in your case an alpha channel so that processing can be done using them.

Show me a display adapter (crt, lcd, plasma) that can display things partially transparently and I''d buy a few. Holographic displays could do it I suppose, but you generally just see some background color rather than the walls of your room.
