i recommend you urgent, NOT TO USE one of those opensource packs;
use JBuilder personal edition, free on linux - it really rocks and bashes the other in this thread named products by mile-lengths !
(i have worked over a year with JBuilder at a preceeding employer)

If you''re going to be suggesting paying for IDE''s, JBuilder is nothing compared to IntelliJ IDEA.

If you really like *closedsource* (if there is opensource, why not this term?) software, try IntelliJ IDEA from http://www.intellij.com I have spend hours trying different IDEs for Java, and I can gurantee IntelliJ IDEA is the best, by far.

If you do not want to pay, try Eclipse from http://www.eclipse.org

Note that both IDEs do not inlclude a GUI maker. A free IDE with GUI maker with so-so features is Netbeans from http://www.netbeans.org

Isn''t there supposed to be a new/experimental GUI building plugin for Eclipse? I keep meaning to find the time to actually try it...

Netbeans!

Out of all the Java IDEs ive tried this has to be the worst one, my personal favourites are JCreator (due to its Visual Studio style interface) and Eclipse which is what i''m currently using for my Java programming

I''ve used it. It''s OK, but it''s best to think of it as a tool that saves a lot of typing rather than a tool that will magically build your app, if you see what I mean. You still need to know a fair bit of Swing to make it useful, and it''s not as intuative as, say, JBuilder.

But it''s free, and Eclipse itself is wonderful

I''m not sure if people are still reading this, but if they are...

In my opinion Gel is the best free Java IDE. I went through a period of trying out all of the free IDEs that I could find... forgotten most of their names, but they included JEdit, JCreator, TextPad... most of the ones mentioned here (except Eclipse, I am about to try that now...).

So yeah it only has a windows version, but it is everything that I want in an IDE - it doesn''t have that many ''fancy'' options like JBuilder or anything, but it does have stuff like inbuilt Ant, JavaDoc... and heaps of stuff that I don''t use. It is very fast. That is about all I can think of to say...

Um... so give Gel a go.
Whoops...

Gel''s website is www.gexperts.com

It is pretty easy to navigate and find what you want, unlike the Eclipse website...
