I would recommend 3D Game Programming With DirectX 9.0 by Frank Luna.

Unlike most DX books, this one skips the standard 3 chapters on Win32 and focuses solely on D3D (after a brief chapter on 3d math). Luna does an excellent job of explaining the basics and writes pretty good introductory chapters on more advanced topics like creating a particle system and a terrian engine. The last part of the book gives a good introduction to shaders and the effects framework.

Intro to 3D game programming with DirectX9.0 is pretty good. Goes over just about everything. I just didn''t like his time system though, seemed really glitchy and slow when used. The author has a website too and replies to any questions in regards to the book.
