file extension question

My program needs to save data to disk. It will be ascii. I don''t want to use .txt file but can''t seem to figure out how to change the extension in win98. I tried renaming the file but it won''t let me edit the extension. How do i do it? ECKILLER

in the view->folder options, under the view tab, do u have ''hide file extensions for known types'' unchecked ?
