Testing... Testing... 1...2?

This forum is a think-tank. We''ve had so many ideas in here, all with so much potential. So I''m thinking... "It''s such a waste that most arguements about ideas on GDNet come down to a lack of evidence. If we had some kind of testing environment, we could get some indication of what worked and what doesn''t." So then it dawned on me! Is it possible that between the lot of us, we could create a "virtual" text-based MMORPG? With no substantial content, and virtual players? That way we could dump new ideas into the existing experiment, try running them in different combinations, etc.? It wouldn''t be too hard to collect some statistics and variables from existing MMORPGs, and set up a basic "player-logic" for the system to follow. It''d be nice to see what works with different variables... Can it be done? Of course. Is anyone willing to help me get it done? I''ll help, heck, I''ve started work on something like this because it''s becoming harder and harder to communicate my ideas without a solid example.

  • Email/EGroups message group, though I hate those.

  • Set up some freaky server thing to share files etc.

What skills are required and what do we need? I can only help with game logic solutions but i would spend time to help with this

So we need a web site to start with. Who wants to be the guinea pig?

I love Game Design and it loves me back.

Such a system will have to be quite flexible to incorperate all the ideas expressed in this forum. I suggest building a scripting engine into the core of the simuluator to allow people to modifiy aspects of it easily. The scripting engine can be based on one of the freely availbale ones like lua, small c, or phython. The design of the engine itself will be critical. Perhaps a start would be to specify some deisgn goals for the simulator.

Not to be a dick about this, but I''m worried. Someone is going to have to do the grunt work of programming. I fear that what might come of this is a bunch of ideas for a solid design, but no one wanting to program and get it running. I know a little, but not enough to begin something like this. Heck, I''m not done with my own RPG yet...but I''ll keep my ear to this thread.

I''m mainly C++ at the moment, but I am adaptible...
I can go from Assembler, over C and C++, to Java or Visual Basic even if need be. It depends on what everyone''s comfortable with and who wants to contribute actual code besides just good ideas.

Also, I''d like to reiterate that I''m willing to help, but I''m not all that skilled yet, so my assitance would be in writing simple functions, etc. or something along those lines. In other words -all the junk no-one else wants to bother w/-! :]

I can help with C++, Visual Basic, heck even a little OpenGL if we ever want to test interfaces or create tools.

Wonder how many people will actually be willing to help. Already 8 people.....

If anyone knows of any clean MUD/MUSH/MOO code base that we might "borrow" some ideas from, let us know.
And this thing should be 100% Open Source, so that people can not only (ab)use the scripting system, but also modify the code for their own use.

Ps: The scripting language I''m thinking of is along the lines of Prolog, since that comes closest to defining reasoning rules, and facts.
