Win32
If I''m not planning to make the next greatest blockbuster 3D game and would rather while away my time remaking some of my teenage favorites like PacMan, Galaga, R-Type, Gyrus, is it reasonable to stick with Win32? Also, is Petzold 5th ed. still applicable to XP Pro or is there a better (newer) Win32 bible?

The Petzold 5th ed. is good for all 32-bit versions of windows. However - he sometimes uses functions that are obsolete even on Win98. It''s good book to learn the basics - to learn more (and there''s a lot of it uncovered it that book), you should lear from MSDN.
And - yes - you can remake it with Win32API and GDI. With some effort.

Unreadable code is code written on a piece of paper, but not the one, in which its programmer is using a space in place you don''''t.

Thanks for the super fast reply!
"With some effort." Should that be read, "with excessive pain, so use DirectX?"

"With some effort" = it won''t be easy.
"Use DirectX" = commit suicide - use OpenGL :-)
I meant that GDI is not designed specifically for this kind of soft, but it can be used for it, though.

Thanks again for the quick replies and the tutorial link. I think that learning the Win32 API is a useful pursuit unto itself. Rehashing some of my old favorites will at least make it interesting. 8^)
Any other opinions on the validity (or lack thereof) of using Win32?

I think that it''s a fine start. I recently purchased the Petzold book and to be honest I don''t think it''s very good. Just start with Win32 and the many tutorials out there (the things you''re mentioning aren''t so advanced, and just keep an eye out on the other graphics API''s for the future. Cheers.
You''re better off with something like SDL. IT''s really simple to use (way simpler than Win32) and is supported on every platform anyone could want to use. If you stick to the basic 2D stuff, it should run anywhere.
It also works very nicely with OpenGL, and has it''s own sound libraries, input libraries, and networking libraries.
Why anyone would choose something else is a mystery to me.
