Do I have to write a color pallet for ddraw

No, just initialize DirectDraw so that you have 32 bits of color.

HRESULT SetDisplayMode(
DWORD dwWidth,
DWORD dwHeight,
DWORD dwRefreshRate,
DWORD dwFlags

dwBPP is the bits per pixel, set it to 32.

Yeah, you dont need to use 32 bits, you could just use 24 bits too. Use whatever bit depth suits your requirements.
