Creating a cube map from design

How does one go about designing a cube map from scratch .. I know how to code in DX to load the map.. but I do not know how to design a cube map.. anyone can help?

Try the DirectX Texture Tool found in the Utilities folder (it can found under Start -> Programs -> Microsoft DirectX ... SDK -> Utilities -> DirectX Texture Tool. It allows you to ''paint'' all 6 sides of the cube and save it to a compatable format.

The best way according to me would be to model your "scene" in a DCC tool and render 6 views from the center. You could use Corel Bryce or Terragen.
