Render States Handling

Hello, I need to set renderstates when rendering my 3d-world. For example I need alpha blending enabled for glass and such. Setting render states consumes a large amount of time so I am sorting my models by renderstates (other things too). I have all required renderstates per modell in a list which is attached to the modell. What I wonder is how professionel engines handle Render States. For example Quake3 or Doom3.
