file load times

hi, i have implemented a tga loader, now, the load times takes a while, this is because i read 1 pixel at a time from the file, now i could read the whole file in at the start into a buffer, but i need to determine file size somehow (im using SDL for cross platform, so OS specifics are out) or i could read in chunks at a time, this would be okay for an uncompressed tga as i can determine how much i need to read in, but with compresed tga i cant do this! ideas welcome
