For my latest mp3, Roman Battle, I looked to the Gladiator soundtrack's frenzied battle music for inspiration. Any comments? Roman Battle *** Looking for a music composer for your game? Not bad mate. Were you using orchestral sampling for all the instruments? Some sound real and some sound more like a synth module.
I just finished a tune which also leads to a battle type feel, if you're interested in a listen. It wasn't inspired by Gladiator although I'm a huge fan of that soundtrack.
Keep up the good work.

Which do you think sound most synth-like?

I guess upon a second listen, it was mainly the percussion that didn''t sound overly convincing for me. Although I''m assuming now that the perc was from the same orchestral software?

Personally, I think it''s quite lacking in the low string section. From the sound of things, your program automatically pans the instruments to where they would be in a normal orchestral setup (something I think you should look into). So all your strings are panned to the left. Which sounds totally wrong to me. Add some parts in the cello and dbl bass sections as accents to the melodies and "big triumphant sounding" passages. Other than that though, (With an agreement with the other guy about the synthie drums) I like it quite a bit.

It''s too happy! All medieval battle music needs to use the phrygian mode for that sinister effect!

Ok, on a more serious note, I think it''s lacking the classic booming timpani that you might expect. But perhaps I am too easily impressed by clichés! The drums seem to recall the standard marching theme but maybe that''s a bit more contemporary than the Roman era? Lastly, if it''s for use in a game during a battle then maybe that quieter section at about 0:58 is inappropriate, as it loses the sense of urgency.

Well... I REALLY like this! Your composition is stirring. Good job! I''m afraid I must agree with the others that your percussion samples are quite lacking, especially the snare, but other than that, I think it sound pretty good.

Thanks all for the comments.

The samples are a hodgepodge of Miroslav / Vitous samples and free samples from the net. Incidentally, the snares are from the latter, so no wonder they sound sub-par
