having problems with SDL mixer and playing a sound

has anyone here ever worked with SDL mixer? im trying to add sound effects to my pong game, but for some reason the sound is being delayed. like when the sound is supposed to be played, it waits half a second or so and then plays it. i dont know why this is happening. its not my sound effect because the sound effect itself is 00:00 seconds long. also, its not my code because ive tried switching the line where the sound is played Mix_PlayChannel(0,hit_ball,0); with the crappy built in sound API PlaySound() the PlaySound() function played the sound when i wanted it to. but i dont want to use this crappy API, i want to use the good SDL_Mixer library. does anyone have any experiance with it, and if so, what is my problem? why isnt my sound playing right away? thanks for any help
