Getting keyboard input in javascript

Recommended Posts

First you write an input handling method like so:

function handleInput() {
// the value of the key pressed

// is in event.keyCode, so a switch on that

// will let you handle the different cases

switch (event.keyCode) {
case 48:
// '0' was pressed

// ...

// all the other cases


Then you use the onkey* on the tag of the HTML element you want the input handled for. For example, if you want to "key down" for the whole page, you put it in the BODY tag:

<BODY onkeydown="handleInput();">
