Vertex Storage

Does anyone know what most big games that use OpenGL do for vertex storage? Do they use vertex arrays or what? I''m trying to abandon DirectX but I''m having difficulties since display lists are too slow. Any information or links you could dump on me would be great. Thanks in advance.

it would have been vertex array with possibly using the var or vao extensions, however now its most likely to be VBO (vertex buffer objects) which I belive are the same as D3D''s vertex buffers
