Question about collision detection in advanced raycasting engine

i have been doing my advanced raycasting engine for my final year project.in the engine,the wall is rendered as a line in the form of (x1,y1,x2,y2).after reading some article about advanced raycasting,i implemented some collision detection into it.the idea is check the distance betweent the wall that player is facing to and the player.if the distance is smaller than some value,then stop player.however,this only works when player is moving forwards.can some one give me some advice on moveing backwards plz?thx in advance.
