Rendering Cigarette Smoke

Well, I''ve never gotten far enough in a project to worry ''bout that stuff yet, but judging from what I''ve seen , I''d say you''re definitely on the right track with with particle effects.

If you have ever seen a cigarette burn it doen''t look like smoke you would see coming from a fire of wood, paper, etc. It looks more like lines swirling in random ways. I was thinking maybe billboarding would work.

This is just an idea I had, never seen it before, but perhaps might work well to get that look is instead of using billboards for the particle system, use a particle system of cylinders, or better yet, cones.... and then just use whisps as the textures on the cylinders (the rest is alpha blended out), so it looks like the smoke is swirling up.

Hufo does a very good smoke effect that would work very well for cigarette smoke
