How do I setup a 3d orthogonal projection?

I''m trying to setup a projection like the top left right front views in 3ds max. When I use glOrtho and translate x y half the viewport''s dimensions I can see my object, but its flat. (by flat i mean when i rotate it, the cube is a z fighting square) I think this is because when in ortho mode only the x and y matter. I need all 3 coords to matter becuase the user could rotate the ortho view like User in 3dsmax. How would I do this?

I set it to 1 and 100, all that happens is i lose my interface(they use hte same function)
