particle question

How do you take a particle texture and create a trail or beam out of it, im refering for now to 2D? Like in a burst of little particles, there could be a trail on each of them, like a streak, how would this be done? Thx for any help.

I usually just generate a line with a vertex to the particle itself and the other vertex at an arbitrary distance dependent on the speed. The vertex that is trailing behind the particle will have its direction(that it is pointing at) opposite of the particle''s direction to indicate a "passing" effect.

You can do this with more particles themselves, have each particle that is smaller than the one before it follow the main one; from there you can create a faded tail or multi-colored.

If you don''t want to use more particles then you could utilize pixels with glPointSize to adjust the size of the tail so to create a smaller end as if the tail is fading away.
