Clipping, and Alpha channels

Hello, I have even more opengl problems: It looks like it doesn''t matter if one object is behind another, but instead, the one I draw last is always visible in front of the other. How to let opengl clip and/or use the zbuffer? And, I have RGBA textures, how can I use the alpha channel for translucency? (0 = invisible, 255 = opaque, anything between is semi translucent)?
