glGetString returns NULL

Are there any prerequisities to calling glGetString, I know the function works because the sample applications from Nehe that I have run work fine (with glGetString) but when I call for example ''glGetString(GL_EXTENSIONS)'' a NULL pointer is returned. Same thing happens with gl_renderer, gl_version, etc. Anything that needs to be called before I can call that function (need to setup something)? Any ideas? Thanks

You need a valid rendering context for them to work. That''s very annoying, but it''s the way it works.
