Is there a built-in way of doing this, or must I process all the pixels???

you''ll have to process all the pixels (switch to direct3d or opengl)
You have to do it manually. Belive me, it is not even worth trying. Alpha-blending in DirectDraw will kill your framerate UNLESS you only use it here and there for small sprites etc. If you want to use alpha-blending and other nice effects you''ll need to make the jump to Direct3D. You will not regret it.
I do usually work in d3d, but there are some advantages here that i dont know how to do in D3d, for ex. colorcoded surface rectangle tranfer and other things
