HTML Java Applet Autofocus

Is there a way to immediately set the focus of a web page onto a java applet. In other words make it so that the user doesn''t have to click in the applet window to have keyboard commands reocgnized? When you find yourself in the company of a halfling and an ill-tempered Dragon, remember, you do not have to outrun the Dragon...
