Hi, im sort of new to openGL (and programming!) and i need some help. i want to create effects on the screen that blur pixel values together (like motion blur effects or fading the whole screen to black) but i not sure how to do it. would i use pixel shaders or, could i manipulate the frame buffer myself?? or should i just give up on the idea? b.t.w. the effect is for a 2D game not 3D!if that makes any difference!?! thanks.

you might want to look into blending. nehe.gamedev.net might be a good place to start, as well as any online opengl reference (msdn, the red book). you can achieve many bluring and fading effects with that

the simplest way to fade is to draw a quad that covers the screen with varying values of alphaness. erm. yeah.

Motion blur and fade to black effects can usualy be done without using pixel shaders. Of course if you know your target audience support it, by all means go for it! Shaders are so much more fun ^_^.
