Toolpath Simulation

I''m trying to write softwares which can do toolpath simulation as seen in CADCAM software. How does the software simulate the removal of material from a stock material? Which OpenGL functions are used? Please provide a tip for me to follow up upon...such as a help/FAQ for me to read up. Regards tohdj
