Implementing a simple vertex shader?

I was hoping to learn a little bit about vertex shaders and was wondering what would be a good place to start for your first vertex shader? Does anyone know of any good tutorials or examples of implementing your first vertex shader? I also am reading the SDK on them but any extra info would be great.

Wolf put a whole vertex/pixel shading series here on gamedev. I would start with the vertex shading of a simple polygon spinning around a central axis. Then reproduce the same event with pixel shaders.
