No 3D Acceleration?

I am running Debian, XFree 4.3, and kernel 2.6.4. I am trying to get 3D Acceleration with my Radeon 9000 Pro. First I tried Radeon's driver, but it was giving me a ton of trouble and wouldn't compile the module. It gave an error message that the DRM includes don't match, and I should upgrade to X 4.1 or higher and kernel 2.4.8 or higher (no typo). I have heard all sorts of horror stories about ATI's drivers, too. Then I replaced those with Mesa and tried DRI. I got two packages, xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk and xlibmesa-gl1-dri-trunk, and drm-trunk-module-source. I installed the first two with dpkg and unzipped and compiled the third with the included script. I saw that the .ko files were built and changed my driver to radeon in XF86Config-4. When I rebooted, there was still no hardware acceleration! lsmod showed that the modules radeon, agpgart, and sis-agp were running, though radeon had 0 in the used by column. I have gotten ATI's driver working with SuSE, but I really want to use Debain. Any help is greatly appreciated. [edit]: Paragraphs [edited by - nagromo on March 25, 2004 11:12:27 PM]

I don''t see why a Radeon 9000 Pro would not be supported by XFree86 4.3 by default (without the closed drivers). The Radeon 9200 and below had specifications that were given to some DRI developers under NDA and, hence, the Radeon 9000 Pro is explicitly listed as supported. Maybe something was just misconfigured to be with?

I''m unsure of exactly what you say you have installed. I know you''ve said that "there was still no hardware acceleration", but what is the output of glxinfo? How about XFree86''s log? I''m just guessing for where to find answers (not having first-hand access, and all), but sometimes it''s helpful .

Thanks for trying, by there was no acceleration I mean glxinfo gave Mesa GLX Indirect.

Now that you mention it, glxinfo does return some weird stuff... It gives several advanced capabilities and tables but still says Mesa indirect. Here is the output:

Thanks for helping, I hope we can get it working!
Nevermind, I finally figured it out! agpgart and sis-agp were loading after X started in response to radeon module looking for agp. I added agpgart and sis-agp to /etc/modules, and it worked! This has been bugging me for weeks, if you couldn't tell. I have dri working, and I don't want to look at ATI's drivers. Thanks for helping me brainstorm...

[edit]: There is one other problem, though. It's running at 1x AGP, while it could do 8x. How can I change the AGP speed to 4x or 8x?

I only suggest this ''cause you haven''t mentioned it already. There is a BIOS setting that sets the AGP x level (x1, x2, x4, etc). Do you have it set in the BIOS?
Oops, I forgot to mention that... Yes, I have it set in BIOS, and it works fine in Windows.
Open "man radeon" and type "/AGPMode" and hit enter. To sum it up for you: place a line with Option "AGPMode" "level" in the "Device" section of the video card in your XF86Config-4 file. AGP level 8 isn''t documented, but it may work anyway. Otherwise, use 4, I suppose.

Depending upon the quality of the motherboard drivers, stability may suffer as you turn it higher, but don''t worry about that unless it actually proves to be a problem; you''d likely have seen it already by just having AGP enabled if you were going to see it at all.
