qustion about glEvaluators

I can see the idea of using glEvaluators with glEvalMesh and such in making a surface... now if the degree is low, like 2 or 1 (thus the surcface is not curvy at all if degree is 1) is it faster to just caclualte the triangles/quads/whatever yourself and then use glDrawElements instead?
