What is a vertex/pixel shader? My graphics card says I have "Smart Shader" technology. What is this?

Shaders are small assembly or C++-like programs that the developer can write that will be executed directly on the graphics card.

Please do a search on the net for something like "Intro to Shaders" and you''ll find lots of material. Gamedev has a number of articles on the topic. The DX SDK also has some info.

Check out this link here on gamedev for an article introducing shaders.

If you are looking for some books on shaders and HLSL, the ShaderX2 series are highly recommended. The introduction book presents an introduction, as well as multiple types of lighting and shading. The Tips & Tricks book contains many awesome articles that implement some great effects.
