Clearing the screen

Usually, before draw a frame you clear the screen, but, if you render all the screen every frame (for example in an FPS indoor level, you draw all polys, draw the sky, ...) is needed to clear the screen? I ask this in general, can be opengl,d3d,ddraw,vesa,mode13 ...

Maybe i''m all wrong here, but if you''re doing 3D, you''ll need to clear the depth buffer or else it won''t render correctly
